Beginning in 2019, I retired as a full time professor and began to spend half the year in Delhi, India with my elderly parents. I found my way to a sawmill, had some logs custom cut and created a small workshop to continue my woodwork here. The ready availability of dense tropical woods for rustic furniture work provides a great impetus for hours and hours of fun filled woodery!
Over time, I have developed a particular affinity for using Neem wood in WoodLotus table projects. Neem is tropical hardwood tree that has many medicinal benefits. Its wood is dense, strong and naturally pest resistant. It has beautiful grain and colors ranging from red to light brown.
The painted table shown has been done on a slice of wood from the Mango Tree. It is a relatively softer wood. I have continued to experiment with my favorite themes of the Sun, flowers and sense of flow. Painting takes a lot of detailed effort and is also subject to 'artistic moods'. It takes courage to allow a work of art to lead you to unexpected places... and to vistas of persisting visual delight.
